To do a quick exercise you need the following information:
Target Keyword
Cost Per Click (Google Ads)
Traffic Estimate per Month
$$$ Value of Each New Client
Example 1: “Keyword XYZ” costs $10 per click and has 500 hits per month in the USA and the value of one new client is $500. This means that at a 1% close rate it costs $1000 in advertising per 100 leads to pay for an ad campaign and you lose $500 in profit per new client acquired. For SEO, it means that the total bucket is valued at around $5k per month. SEO in this instance would be ideal and a #1 spot is worth about $2500 per month to your business.
Example 2: “Keyword 123” costs $1 per click and has 1000 hits per month in the USA and the value of one new client is $250. This means that at a 1% close rate it costs $100 in advertising per 100 leads to pay for an ad campaign and generates a positive return per lead from the ad campaign. For SEO, it means that the total bucket is only valued at around $1k per month and you should stick with a paid campaign.
